In Augusts past, a group of kindergarteners graduated from the Head Start program, the first Asian American woman ordained in the PCUSA sat down for an oral history interview, and the Covenant Network of Presbyterians was founded.
PHS staffers Luci Duckson-Bramble and David Staniunas were in and around Charlotte, North Carolina in late June to join the biennial gathering of the National Black Presbyterian Caucus. Our thanks go out first to the organizers of the event, especially to our colleague Lynne Foreman. Hereβs a snapshot of our time there.
Preserving the Past, Empowering the Future has successfully raised $430,000 in actual gifts and pledges. Funding from the campaign is already at work suppporting three major areas of PHS's ministry.
This month, PHS unveiled the fresh new site for Pearl Digital Collections. What better way to celebrate this next chapter than to spend time getting to know its emponym: Nobel-Prize winning author and prominent Presbyterian, Pearl S. Buck.
2024 Research Fellow Dr. Alderi Souza de Matos has visited our Reading Room nearly every week from last September to mid-July, 2025.
We've received word that he and his family have returned safely to Brazil, where he serves as the Official Historian for Presbyterian Church of Brazil (IPB) and Professor of Church History and Historical Theology at Andrew Jumper Presbyterian Graduate Center at Mackenzie Presbyterian University.
"I miss the pleasant and profitable time I had with you at PHS," Dr. Matos wrote us, "and thank you again for your kindness, patience, and helpfulness." Above, he stands with our Public Services team, who worked closely with him for the duration of his research here.
Thank you to our amazing Fellows for the dedication and commitment to their research (and for always handling items with care!), and thank you to our amazing staff members for crafting such a positive experience for Dr. Matos!
